Montenegro

Montenegro

Montenegro is still a relatively unknown destination compared to Croatia which has become a firm favourite with many European travellers. But very close to it, lies this little pearl, Montenegro (or “Black Mountain”) which only gained its independence from neighbouring Croatia in 2006. This tiny Balkan country, The Republic of Montenegro, is surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania. Following the country´s first election on 21 May 2006, the country left the union with Serbia and became independent.

It may be modest in terms of area, but this gem of a country certainly packs a lot in and the beauty of it is that distances between its stunning towns are so short, you can virtually see it all quite easily, or even combine it with a trip to Croatia to enjoy two countries for the price of one! Or very nearly! It has something to suit every taste – so whether you are a history buff, nature-lover or thrill- seeker Montenegro has plenty to offer from the Adriatic coast with its many fine beaches to the solitude and beauty of its mountains and valleys with their clear lakes, fast-flowing rivers and forests. For those who are looking for an active holiday, this is the place to hike, bike, kite-surf, paraglide or river raft.

But don´t forget to visit some of Montenegro´s stunning towns where you´ll feel as if you have stepped back in time. Don´t miss Budva, its most popular destination with its 15th. century citadel, or 2000-year-old Kotor, Boka Bay with its Venetian maze of cobbled streets, or the tiny island of Sveti Stefan (St. Stephen), once a fishing village of old stone houses perched on the rocks with amazing views across the sea, now transformed into an upmarket, luxury resort complete with spa, gym and infinity pool – at once both rustic and elegant. Accommodation here ranges from individual rooms to villas with pools. Or what about Perast with its 16 churches, 17 grand palazzos and 2 islands? On second thoughts, perhaps it does deserve a vacation all on its own!
