If you look at the map of the world (see below), the Maldives are not hard to miss at first glance. A thousand kilometres southwest from Sri Lanka, is where you´ll find this beautiful group of almost 1200 islands, floating in the Indian Ocean. 187 of them are inhabited by ethnic Maldivians, who are renowned throughout the world for their hospitality towards visiting tourists. The population of the Maldives is around the 400,000 mark, spread out across almost 200 islands. The various Maldivian islands are divided up into 20 administrative atolls. Malé Island with its sunny capital of the same name is situated in the Kaafu Atoll. In the capital, you can visit the historic Malé Friday Mosque, one of the most ornate in the city. Built of coral boulders in 1658, it was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites as a unique example of sea-culture architecture. Definitely a first for many visitors!
